The Saugus Band and Color Guard, under the direction of Jay Jarrett, is one of the most exciting and competitive programs in Southern California. The students work in the fall in the marching band, competing on the SCSBOA circuit of competitive marching band and in the spring in award-winning concert bands. The Color Guard competes in the winter/spring season in the WGA competitive circuit. The jazz band at Saugus has continued a tradition of playing at Vincenzo’s Pizza in Saugus for over 20 years, and it continues to be an exciting and enjoyable experience for all who attend.
Jay Jarrett Director of Instrumental Music
Mr. Jarrett teaches marching band, jazz band, concert bands, and guitar classes at Saugus High School. Before coming to Saugus High School in 2016, he taught high school for four years in Bakersfield, CA achieving success both on and off the field with his bands. He holds bachelor’s degrees in trombone performance and music education from Northern Illinois University, and he earned his master’s degree in conducting from California State University Northridge in 2016.
Mr. Jarrett enjoys the frequent opportunities to collaborate with the staff at Saugus, opening up the students in the band to different and fun performance opportunities. He also has performed professionally with the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, The Valley Chamber Ensemble, and in studios. He enjoys spending his free time with his wife, Azin and daughter Jazmin.
Bob Grigas Percussion Caption
Bob Grigas have been studying percussion since 1999. Through his studies, he has played in multiple groups that have traveled all across the country. Throughout the last 11 years, he has played in some of the most prestigious concert halls in America such as The Broad Theatre, The John F. Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Valley Performing Arts Center, The Ford Amphitheater, and Carnegie Hall.
Bob has had the privilege to have studied under some of the greatest musicians in LA and the world such as John Magnussen, Jerry Steinholtz, Alex Acuna, Pete Korpela, Randy Gloss, Swapan Chaudari, David Roitstein, Joey Deleon, Walter Rodriguez, Nani Agbeli, Gary Pratt, John Daversa, Jeff Elwood, Dr. John Roscigno, and Matt Altmire. He have also been an instructor and educator for the past 14 years at a number of High Schools and Middle Schools in Southern California including Azusa H.S., California H.S., Schurr H.S., Edison H.S., Claremont H.S., Esperanza H.S., La Mirada H.S., Redlands East Valley H.S., Agoura H.S., Saugus H.S. and South Pointe M.S. He received his bachelors of Music degree with an emphasis in Percussion at Cal State University Northridge in 2013, and a Masters degree in World Percussion from California Institute of the Arts in 2016.
